NEW YORK, NY — Today, Popular Democracy in Action announced that Co-Executive Director Analilia Mejia will be taking a leave of absence as she pursues a run for New Jersey’s 11th Congressional District. In response, Co-Executive Director DaMareo Cooper released the following statement:
“Analilia Mejia has been an essential leader in our movement, driving bold vision, strategic discipline, and an unwavering commitment to working people across this country. We are proud of all she has accomplished as Co-Executive Director of the Center for Popular Democracy and Popular Democracy in Action, and fully support her decision to take a leave of absence while she runs to represent New Jersey’s 11th Congressional District.
“This is a pivotal moment for our country, especially for working families, Black, brown, immigrant, and working-class communities who urgently need bold leaders in Washington. Analilia has spent her entire career championing economic justice, immigrant rights, and a democracy that includes all of us. We at Popular Democracy in Action are incredibly proud to see a leader from our movement step forward to meet these challenges and fight for the communities we serve.
“While Analilia steps away to focus on her campaign, I and our incredible team will continue to remain steady and laser-focused on our mission: building base from the ground up, to achieve governing power with and for our communities. The strategy and vision that make this organization strong are not changing. Our work continues with the same commitment, clarity, and urgency.”
