Popular Democracy In Action Condemns The Passage Of Trump’s “Big, Bad Betrayal Of A Bill”

WASHINGTON, DC — In response to the passage of the federal reconciliation bill in the US Senate by a 51-50 vote, Popular Democracy in Action co-executive directors DaMareo Cooper and Analilia Mejia released the following statement:

“This bill is heartless and inhumane. The Senators and Representatives who backed this big, bad betrayal of a bill should feel something worse than shame. They have blood on their hands.

“At a time when families are struggling to make ends meet, Republicans passed a bill that rips away healthcare and food assistance from millions of families, while driving up the cost of basic necessities like electricity. They made their stance very clear: they are willing to take from the poor, if it means handing massive tax breaks for the rich.

“Nearly 16 million people will lose their healthcare. These are babies, whose mothers can no longer rely on Medicaid to afford a safe birth. These are families, people with disabilities, elders, who can not afford healthcare, and will be poorer, sicker, and more likely to die than ever before. SNAP — federal food assistance — will be cut in half. Hundreds of thousands of schoolchildren will now be going from hungry bellies at home to empty plates in school.”

For the past months, Popular Democracy in Action brought everyday people to Washington DC–people risking everything to protect their healthcare and their ability to live with dignity. In response, Congressional Republicans have either turned their backs or made a mockery of the very constituents whose lives are now on the line.

Popular Democracy in Action is unwavering in their commitment to hold every member of Congress accountable who has chosen political gain over the lives of everyday people. In the coming weeks, we will escalate our efforts to put pressure on Congress to stand by their constituents and protect the life-saving services that millions depend on to survive.
