Statement from Popular Democracy in Action Executive Director DaMareo Cooper on Supreme Court Decision Protecting Vote-by-Mail Ballot Counting

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Popular Democracy in Action Executive Director DaMareo Cooper released the following statement:

“President Trump and his allies have spent years searching for new ways to keep eligible people from voting, and today, the Supreme Court rejected one of them. The principle at stake in this case was simple: if a voter casts their ballot on time and follows the rules, that vote should count.

“At a moment when the Trump administration is pressuring states, federal agencies, and even the Postal Service to restrict vote-by-mail, today’s ruling rejects an effort to throw out lawful votes and silence eligible voters. It reminds us once again of the 14th Amendment’s foundational promise that voters in our country have equal protection and equal voice in our democracy. That promise means elections should be decided by voters, not by postal delays, bureaucratic hurdles, or partisan trickery designed to make voting harder.

“We are glad the Court recognized what should be obvious: every ballot mailed on time counts. This victory belongs to the organizers, advocates, and voters who continue defending our democracy against relentless attacks on the freedom to vote. We will keep fighting until every eligible voter can cast a ballot and have that ballot counted.”
