Statement from Popular Democracy in Action Executive Director DaMareo Cooper on Supreme Court Decision Allowing the Termination of Temporary Protected Status

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Popular Democracy in Action Executive Director DaMareo Cooper released the following statement:

“Today, the Supreme Court opened the door to the largest de-documentation event in American history. With this decision, the federal government is stripping legal status from roughly 1.3 million people who followed every rule this country asked of them. They renewed their status, raised children, built businesses, and became part of communities across this country. Today’s ruling tells them that everything they have built can be ripped away the moment they become politically inconvenient.

The 14th Amendment reflects a simple promise: that every person gets equal protection under the law. Those inalienable rights should not depend on who holds power. Yet President Trump’s decision to terminate TPS is part of a broader agenda to create a country where entire communities can be thrown into chaos whenever a President decides they no longer belong. 

What happened today should alarm every person in this country. If politicians can rip away protections that families have relied on for years, then it gives politicians greater power to treat entire communities as expendable.

This captured Court failed these families today and failed our Constitution, but our movement is not backing down. We will continue organizing, fighting, and demanding a country where people can build a future free from the whims of politicians.”
