Statement from Popular Democracy in Action Executive Director DaMareo Cooper on Supreme Court Decision Restricting Access to Asylum

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Popular Democracy in Action Executive Director DaMareo Cooper released the following statement:

“Today, the Supreme Court gave the MAGA government greater power to deny people a chance to be heard before deciding their fate. The administration wanted the power to turn asylum seekers away before they could even make their case, and this captured Court, beholden to President Trump, let them do it.

The 14th Amendment’s promise of due process for all people in our country exists for moments exactly like this. It reflects a simple principle: the government does not get to make life-altering decisions without fairness, accountability, and the rule of law. This case was never just about immigration. It was about whether politicians can build walls around who deserves access to justice at all.

President Trump’s assault on asylum is part of a broader effort to hollow out constitutional protections and create different sets of rights for different groups of people. That’s a dangerous road for any democracy. If the government can deny people a hearing before deciding their fate, then due process becomes an option instead of an inalienable right for all. We reject that vision, and we will continue organizing, mobilizing, and fighting for a country where justice is not something politicians get to ration.”
